We believe that the Treaty of Lisbon is simply a reworking of the treaty that sought to give the EU its own Constitution over and above the Constitutions of its Member States. This was rejected by the peoples of France and Holland in referendums in 2005. It is estimated that the Treaty of Lisbon implements 96% of the legal content of that rejected ‘Constitution for Europe’

A referendum must be held in Ireland because the Supreme Court has laid down in the Crotty case that as sovereignty in this State rests with the Irish people only they can surrender it to the EU by referendum or else refuse to surrender it as they decide. It is still our choice - for now!

We believe that, at the very least, we have an obligation as citizens to inform ourselves about the full implications of the Lisbon Treaty.

But to be active citizens we should be prepared to do more.
